Waiting on Wednesday (#50)

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill @ Breaking The Spine
in which we have the opportunity to spotlight upcoming releases we're eagerly anticipating.

This week's pick: THE LANGUAGE OF THORNS by Leigh Bardugo
Expected publication: September 26th, 2017 by Macmillan/Imprint

Love speaks in flowers. Truth requires thorns.

Travel to a world of dark bargains struck by moonlight, of haunted towns and hungry woods, of talking beasts and gingerbread golems, where a young mermaid's voice can summon deadly storms and where a river might do a lovestruck boy's bidding but only for a terrible price.

Inspired by myth, fairy tale, and folklore, #1 New York Times–bestselling author Leigh Bardugo has crafted a deliciously atmospheric collection of short stories filled with betrayals, revenge, sacrifice, and love.

Perfect for new readers and dedicated fans, these tales will transport you to lands both familiar and strange—to a fully realized world of dangerous magic that millions have visited through the novels of the Grishaverse.

This collection of six stories includes three brand-new tales, all of them lavishly illustrated with art that changes with each turn of the page, culminating in six stunning full-spread illustrations as rich in detail as the stories themselves.

What do you think? And what are you waiting for?

"Firefly" by Molly McAdams

SERIES: Redemption #2
PUBLISHER: Headline Eternal
GENRE: Romantic Suspense
SOURCE: Publisher

As the Princess of the Irish-American Mob, there's no shortage of men ready to help guard and protect me. Kieran Hayes has been saving me for as long as I can remember. It's in his blood, and one of the many reasons I fell in love with him. Until my favourite trait became his biggest flaw, making me resent the man I love. What I wasn't prepared for was Dare—the man who set my world on fire with just one touch. He saw straight through to my soul and silently demanded my heart from the beginning. And I didn't expect Dare to be Demitri Borello—the reason for so many deaths in my family. A man who will take my life the moment he finds out who I am. Despite it all, I'll love him until that moment comes.

"Blackbird" gave me so many—messed up—feelings that I've been highly anticipating this second instalment in the Redemption series. What I wasn't expecting, though, was for new conflicting emotions to arise...

A captivating plot, a girl forced to live following orders that cage her, a secret to keep for her own sake, adrenaline rushing, brief moments of pleasure happiness stolen, and two men fighting—in different ways—for the same girl. I've never been a big fan of triangles but damn, if McAdams didn't persuade me to love the one in here! Kieran Hayes is a gripping character, one you'd very much like to analyse until you have him all figured out. Hope to. Crave to. Can we at least try, Molly McAdams? Then, TRUTH to be told, Demitri Borello is the one making your toes curl and your body temperature rise with just a question, a simple game, one I DARE you to play after reading this book...

I am really amazed by how this author manages to drive me crazy with her dangerously charming characters and dark scenery every time. If you love this genre and are up for a read that you won't be able to put down, I'd say you found your gem!

"The Prince" by Skye Warren

SERIES: Masterpiece Duet #0.5
PUBLISHER: Skye Warren
GENRE: Dark Romance
SOURCE: Freebie
LINKS: Goodreads

Penny doesn't dream about a prince coming to save her from the trailer park. She knows better than that. And the boy she finds hiding in the woods out back is too wild and dangerous to trust. But he may be her only chance at survival.
From New York Times bestselling author Skye Warren comes an emotional new spin-off series. THE PRINCE is a 13,000-word prologue to the new Masterpiece duet.

Skye Warren has done it again! With just a few chapters, she sucked me into what promises to be another dark and captivating story. I haven't read The Endgame Trilogy yet, but I really wanted to try this novella, with or without prior background. Well, gotta be super pleased when you find there is no restrain from enjoying a prequel of a spin-off even when you never heard of the characters before, right? And boy, do we meet them quite young... We get a glimpse of the past that certainly makes for a great introduction!

A fast read with a very interesting encounter that sets your mind in motion and your heart racing. What now? Let Skye Warren tease you with "The Prince", and prepare to meet "The King"...

This week's pick: THE DUCHESS DEAL by Tessa Dare
Expected publication: August 22nd, 2017 by Avon

When girl meets Duke, their marriage breaks all the rules…

Since his return from war, the Duke of Ashbury’s to-do list has been short and anything but sweet: brooding, glowering, menacing London ne’er-do-wells by night. Now there’s a new item on the list. He needs an heir—which means he needs a wife. When Emma Gladstone, a vicar’s daughter turned seamstress, appears in his library wearing a wedding gown, he decides on the spot that she’ll do.

His terms are simple:
- They will be husband and wife by night only.
- No lights, no kissing.
- No questions about his battle scars.
- Last, and most importantly… Once she’s pregnant with his heir, they need never share a bed again.

But Emma is no pushover. She has a few rules of her own:
- They will have dinner together every evening.
- With conversation.
- And unlimited teasing.
- Last, and most importantly… Once she’s seen the man beneath the scars, he can’t stop her from falling in love…

"Blame It on the Duke" by Lenora Bell

SERIES: The Disgraceful Dukes #3
GENRE: Historical Romance
SOURCE: Publisher

Have you heard? The future Duke of Barrington has just been gambled away by his father. To an heiress! The delicious details thus far... Nicholas, Lord Hatherly, never intended to marry—nor add to the 'mad' Hatherly line—but now he must honour his father's debt to a social-climbing merchant or lose the family estate. A notoriously wild marquess, won by her father at a game of cards, is the very last thing Miss Alice Tombs wants. She's spent the last three seasons repelling suitors in spectacular fashion so she'd be at liberty to explore the world. She'll just have to drive this one away as well. Until Nick proposes an utterly tempting arrangement: one summer together to prove the legitimacy of their union, then Alice is free to travel while Nick revels in the time he has left before the Hatherly 'madness' takes hold. It will be easy to walk away after a few months of make-believe wedded bliss—won't it? Alice and Nick are about to find out... one sultry night at a time. This ought to be fun...

Lenora Bell is a new author to me and I'm glad I got the chance to review one of her books. I'm also happy about the fact that—as it usually is with historical romances—this third instalment worked as a stand-alone.

Lord Hatherly and Miss Alice Tombs aren't inclined to tie the knot—with anyone—in the latest, and they most certainly plan on enjoying their lives in very different ways. However, a debt is a debt, and soon they find themselves stuck with each other. But what if they manage an arrangement that could still give them the freedom they crave so much? All seem good to both parts, but Alice demands lessons that turn a stupefied Lord into a seductive Rake whit a very appealing challenge at hand, and soon the atmosphere changes... They don't believe for a second they can fall in love, no matter the pleasure involved in their arrangement, or how well matched they appear to be after all, their primary focus is their freedom. It must be. Well, it should be... Hard to say after secrets are discovered, fears are revealed, and compassion is showed.

A fun and provocative read spiced up by interesting, amusing minor characters and a most welcomed sense of adventure. Lenora Bell offers what I call a lovely Summer read!

RATING: 3.5/5
